Medical miracle, teeth growing in the eye. A 42-year-old man had his teeth removed from the lower part of his eye at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) hospital in Patna, India. After the surgery, his vision is normal and he is currently healthy. Doctors say that this is a very rare case in the history of medicine.
It is known that he first sought help from a local doctor for dental problems. Later, when he developed a lump-like swelling near his eye and blurred vision, he was sent to a hospital in Patna. A CBCT scan revealed that he had teeth growing in the lower part of his eye.
Dr. Nimmi Singh, head of the OMR department at IGIMS, said that this is a developmental anomaly. During the formation of the fetal face, the tooth element moved from its normal place and was positioned below the eye. Maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Priyankar Singh said that the root of the tooth was on the ‘floor of the orbit’ of the eye and the crown part was in the maxillary sinus. The body considered it a ‘foreign body’ and formed a cyst around it, which caused pressure in the eye and swelling in the face.
Considering the patient’s age and profession, the doctors decided to perform the surgery through the mouth (intra-oral method). About 10-12 stitches were required. The tooth was the same size as a pre-molar tooth. Such cases are extremely rare in India; only two to three examples have been found so far. A similar surgery was also performed in Chennai in 2020. According to doctors, once removed, there is no chance of such a tooth growing back.
After the surgery, Ramesh Kumar said, ‘My wife was very worried. Now I want to start a new life, spend time with my wife and children.’ Doctors said that although teeth growing in the eye are rare, it is possible to completely cure the patient with timely detection and surgery.
