A discussion meeting was held at UCSI University Bangladesh Campus on the one-year anniversary of the historic student uprising that took place in July last year. The speakers in the discussion said, ‘Political confusion has become a big obstacle in fulfilling dreams. However, students are still ready as a reserve force.’
The Faculty of Social Science and Liberal Arts organized this on Tuesday (July 29) at 12 noon in the 12th floor hall of the university. Prominent journalists Mostafa Firoz and Shamsul Alam Liton, who played an active role in the movement, participated in the meeting.
Mostafa Firoz said, ‘A year ago, students took to the streets and paved the way for the fall of the fascist government. But the question is to what extent those who are responsible for realizing the dream have been able to fulfill that responsibility. The political culture has not changed, occupation and extortion are going on.’
Shamsul Alam Liton said, ‘Students now know how to build resistance. If democracy and justice are not established, they will take to the streets again.’
The meeting was also addressed by the Dean of the Faculty of Business Management of the university, Professor Dr. Golam Ahmed Farooqui, Dean of the Faculty of Social Science and Liberal Arts, Professor Dr. Bijoy Prasad Barua, students Ahnaf Fateh Hossain and Masfia Rahman Ruhi.
Professor Farooqui said, ‘Bangladesh is now at the beginning of change. This journey is long and thorny, but progress will not stop.’
Professor Barua said, ‘It is not possible to achieve big goals without morality. Students need to be given the mindset to face challenges.’
The discussion meeting was chaired by UCSI University Provost Chan Jo Jim. He said, ‘We should not lose faith in the dream of the July Movement. We must move forward on the basis of mutual respect and trust.’
The talks began with a minute of silence in memory of those killed in the July Uprising and the recent warplane crash at Milestone School and College. After the talks, an exhibition focusing on the July 2024 student uprising was also held.
