Dr. Sakhawat Hossain Unveiled the Geopolitics Book at North South University

The book on geopolitics by Brigadier General (Retd.) Dr. Sakhawat Hossain has been unveiled at North South University. The book was unveiled at a function organized by the South Asian Institute of Policy and Governance (SIPG) today, Tuesday (June 3). Academicians, policymakers, diplomats, researchers, students and media personnel participated in the event.

Dr. Sakhawat Hossain’s new book is Geopolitics and Strategic Shifts in South Asian/Subcontinental Countries. Dr. Sakhawat Hossain is currently serving as an advisor to the Ministry of Labor and Employment and the Ministry of Shipping of the Government of Bangladesh.

The program was moderated by SIPG Director Professor Dr. Sheikh Tawfiq M. Haque. In his welcome speech, Dr. highlighted the need for critical analysis of the geopolitical changes in South Asia. Sheikh Toufiq. He said, “SIPG not only produces knowledge but also provides technical assistance in policy-making. Our teacher is serving as an advisor to the interim government and has also served as a member of the recently formed Reform Commission.”

In the book, Brigadier Sakhawat Hossain continues his previous research and publications, including Electoral Governance in Bangladesh, published by Prothom Alo Publications as part of SIPG’s publications. In the discussion, he said, “When I completed my PhD and joined SIPG, my teacher Professor Salahuddin Aminuzzaman suggested me to start this research. This book is basically a guide to understanding the geopolitics of South Asia. I said in the first chapter—he who controls the sea, controls the world. In today’s world, the East-West conflict is centered in the Eurasian heartland. The Mughals were defeated because they could not understand the importance of the sea and did not have a strong navy. My book also analyzes how the 1962 Indo-China war and the geopolitical transition between Pakistan and India changed regional politics forever.”

The book was officially unveiled by North South University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, Board of Trustees Member M. A. Kashem, SIPG Director Professor Dr. Sheikh Tawfiq M. Haque, and the author of the book Brigadier General (Retd.) Sakhawat Hossain.

Ambassador Sufiur Rahman praised the relevance and analytical writing of the book. He said, “I congratulate Brigadier Sakhawat Hossain for this timely book. Although the content is profound, the book is presented in a very simple manner. The current world order is competitive; initiatives like China’s BRI are having an impact on neighboring countries. The geopolitical instability that is going on in the Pacific Ocean is also spreading to the Indian Ocean. I have not found such a context in any Bangladeshi book before.”
Dr. Raymond Lau highlighted the informative and research-based aspects of the book and said, “This book is a treasure trove of information on South Asia and regional politics. The content is very relevant. However, in my opinion, a more detailed discussion on China’s current regional role can be added in the future.”

Special guest of the event M. A. Kashem highly appreciated the book and reiterated his commitment to NSU’s academic excellence and participation in policymaking. Finally, North South University Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Abdul Hannan Chowdhury expressed his gratitude and said, “Our university is committed to building a platform for research-based dialogue on issues of national and regional importance.”

The event was jointly organized by SIPG and North South University. SIPG, as one of the country’s leading institutions in policy and governance research, continues to make significant contributions to the strategic and academic world of Bangladesh through programs, research, and collaborations.
