DUCSU elections: Hearing on stay of High Court order today. The Appellate Division Chamber Court has extended the stay of the High Court order postponing the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections. The application filed by the Dhaka University (DU) authorities seeking stay of the High Court order has been fixed for hearing in the regular bench of the Appellate Division today, Wednesday (September 3). Appellate Division Chamber Justice Farah Mahbub passed the order on Tuesday (September 2).
Dhaka University lawyer Mohammad Shishir Monir said that the stay order will continue under the High Court order. He said that the application will be the number one item for hearing in the full bench of the Appellate Division on Wednesday.
Earlier, the Chamber Court stayed the High Court’s verdict on Monday (September 1) postponing the DUCSU elections until October 30. Appellate Division Chamber Justice Farah Mahbub passed the order this afternoon. The court passed the order after hearing a handwritten application immediately after the High Court order. At the same time, the court asked the Dhaka University authorities to appeal to the Appellate Division against the High Court order. As per the order of the Chamber Court, the Dhaka University authorities appealed against the High Court verdict.
Earlier, at 3:50 pm on Monday, the High Court adjourned the DUCSU elections until October 30. The High Court bench of Justice Habibul Gani and Justice Sheikh Tahsin Ali gave this order.
The High Court gave this order after hearing a writ petition challenging the candidacy of GS candidate SM Farhad of the United Students’ Alliance nominated panel in the DUCSU elections. Barrister Jyortimay Barua heard the writ petition in the court.
In the High Court order, the writ petitioner and the Liberation War and Democratic Movement Affairs Secretary candidate in the DUCSU elections, BM Fahmida Alam, was asked to submit all the allegations against GS candidate SM Farhad to the DUCSU Election Tribunal within the next 15 days. Immediately, the Dhaka University authorities filed an application in the Chamber Court against this order.
A writ was filed on Monday (September 1) challenging the validity of the candidacy of SM Farhad, the GS candidate of the Chhatra Shibir-backed panel nominated by the United Students’ Alliance, in the DUCSU elections. BM Fahmida Alam, the Liberation War and Democratic Movement Affairs Secretary candidate of the Left Alliance-nominated panel, filed the writ. Barrister Jyortimay Barua is the lawyer for the writ.
