The Election Commission has announced the re-schedule of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JACSU) election. According to the schedule, the election will be held on September 11. The schedule was announced by the Election Commission’s Member Secretary Professor AKM Rashidul Alam at the Senate Bhaban on Sunday (August 10) at around 3:30 pm.
The first election was held that year after the establishment of JACSU in 1972. The last election was held about 33 years ago in 1992. After that, the Jahangirnagar student union election was not held again.
According to the election schedule, objections and opinions regarding the voter list will be accepted until 4 pm on August 14. The final updated voter list and the final code of conduct will be published on August 17. Candidates wishing to participate in the election can submit their applications from 9 am to 4 pm on August 18 and 19. The nomination papers will be scrutinized from August 21 to August 24 and the draft candidate list will be published on August 25.
Appeals regarding the validity of the nomination papers and against their cancellation will be accepted from 9 am to 12 pm on August 26. Later, the appeal hearing will be held on August 27 from 9 am to 2 pm and the appeal verdict will be announced on Wednesday, August 27 at 4 pm. The last date for withdrawal of nomination papers is from 9 am to 4 pm on August 28. After everything, the final candidate list will be published on August 29 at 4 pm.
The schedule also states that the election campaign will continue from 4 pm on August 29 to 12 midnight on September 9. After everything, voting will continue from 9 am to 5 pm on September 11. After voting, the vote counting and results will be published.
In this regard, JU Proctor Professor AKM Rashidul Alam, a member of the Election Commission, said that all necessary measures will be taken to organize a fair and beautiful election.
Earlier, the JACSU schedule was announced at around 1:30 am on May 1 in the council room of the university’s new administrative building. According to that schedule, the elections were supposed to be held on July 31. However, the university authorities issued a notification on the night of June 29, postponing the election schedule.
After the Awami League government fell in the student-public uprising on August 5 last year, students held various programs on campus demanding JACSU elections, including human chains, protest marches, and hunger strikes. In view of the students’ demands, the university administration finally announced the election date.
