Passengers are given an instruction as soon as they board the plane—mobile phones and other electronic devices must be put in flight mode. Many people do not give it much importance. But in reality, this instruction is very important for the safety of the plane.
If the flight mode is not turned on, the radio frequency waves emitted by the mobile phone can interfere with the aircraft’s navigation and communication system. The equipment used in aircraft operation, such as communication radios, navigation devices, and automated control systems, are very sensitive. If multiple passengers use phones at the same time, these devices may not work properly and display misleading information. As a result, the pilot may receive incorrect instructions, which is a major threat to flight safety.
When the plane is at an altitude of 30,000 to 40,000 feet in flight, the mobile phone tries to connect to multiple towers below. This puts unnecessary pressure on the mobile network, which can disrupt services for passengers below.
The phone’s waves can also cause problems with the aircraft’s electronic control system, which can disrupt not only navigation, but also the aircraft’s automatic control system. As a result, the risk of accidents increases.
Until 2013, it was mandatory to turn off your phone completely on flights. Later studies showed that the risk is much lower if you turn on the flight mode. However, many countries still strictly enforce this rule.
For this reason, putting your mobile phone in flight mode as soon as you board the plane is not just a rule—it is a responsibility. It is important to follow this rule to stay safe and ensure the safety of others.
