DIU’s new Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. M. R. Kabir. Professor Dr. M. R. Kabir has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of Daffodil International University. He is a senior professor in the university’s Civil Engineering Department. The Secondary and Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education issued the appointment notification on Tuesday (July 1).

The notification said that with the approval of the President and the Chancellor, Dr. M. R. Kabir has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor for a period of four years as per Section 31(1) of the Private Universities Act 2010. The President and the Chancellor have the power to cancel this order at any time if necessary. He will enjoy the salary, allowances and other benefits determined by the university authorities and will perform his duties as per the law. The order will come into effect immediately in the public interest.

It is learnt that Dr. Kabir completed his PhD from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. His research topic was “Bed Load Transport in Unsteady Flow”, where he achieved Great Distinction.

Earlier, he completed his Post-Graduate Diploma in Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering from Anna University, India, under UNESCO Fellowship. He also did his M.Sc. from BUET and B.Sc. Engineering from Roorkee University (now IIT Roorkee), India. During his academic career, he passed HSC and SSC with first division from Notre Dame College and T&T High School respectively.

Dr. M. R. Kabir has more than four decades of academic and administrative experience. He was the Registrar, Acting Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Asia Pacific. He has also served as a teacher at BUET. At the international level, he has worked as a researcher and visiting professor at the University of Alberta in Canada, the University of Texas at Austin in the United States, and the Technical University of Delft in the Netherlands. He has also taught as a visiting professor at various private universities in the country.

Dr. Kabir’s main areas of research interest are: hydrology, river engineering, flood control, and sediment transport. He has published many research papers in various conferences and journals in the country and abroad, which are making important contributions to the relevant field.

Professor Dr. M. R. Kabir has served as an educationist and administrator at the national and international levels. He served as the Chairman of the Bangladesh Chapter of the Association of Universities of Asia and the Pacific (AUAP) from 2015 to 2021. He was an honorary member of the Board of Accreditation for Engineering and Technical Education (BAETE).

He served as a member of the Board of Governors of the Institute of Water and Flood Management (IWFM) from 2014 to 2016. He served as the Vice President of the Bangladesh Society for Total Quality Management (BSTQM) and the Chairman of the Education Sub-Committee from 2009 to 2018.

In addition, he served as the Director General of the Bangladesh Chapter of the World Council for Total Quality and Excellence in Education (WCTQEE) from 2011 to 2021. In recognition of his outstanding leadership and contribution, he received the ‘Quality Leader Award’ from WCTQEE in December 2011 and the ‘Exemplary Leadership Award’ from EDS Business School, Penang, Malaysia, in March 2012.
