Is eating raw onions good for health or bad?

Is eating raw onions good for health or bad? Onion is an integral part of our daily diet. In addition to using it in cooking, many people like to eat raw onions—with rice, in salads, or on the iftar table. However, the question is, is eating raw onions healthy? Or does it have some harmful aspects?

Raw onions are full of nutrients

Nutritionists say that raw onions contain a lot of antioxidants, vitamin C, flavonoids, and sulfur compounds. These ingredients help increase the body’s immunity. Raw onions control blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease, and increase digestion.

Dr. Sanjida Mahmud, a physician at the Department of Nutrition and Food Science at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said, “Eating raw onions in moderation every day is beneficial for health. It controls blood glucose and also helps reduce cholesterol.”

Keeps the body cool in summer

Especially in summer, raw onions help reduce excess heat in the body. Some people eat a piece of raw onion before leaving the house in the scorching sun. In folk belief, it is considered a home remedy to protect against heatstroke.

However, caution is needed in some cases

Although raw onions have many benefits, they are not safe for all people. For those who have gas or acidity problems, eating raw onions can cause adverse reactions.

Dr. Rizwan Kabir, Associate Professor of the Department of Gastroenterology at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, said, “It is better for those who have digestive problems or those who suffer from IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) not to eat raw onions. Because the fructans in it can increase digestive problems.”

Moreover, many people experience bad breath after eating raw onions, which can cause social discomfort. Therefore, experts recommend washing your face or chewing mint leaves in this case.

Raw onions for diabetic patients

Studies have shown that raw onions can control blood sugar levels. Therefore, it can act as a natural aid for diabetic patients. However, it is important to maintain the quantity and consult a doctor.

Eating raw onions is healthy, but it depends on the natural condition of the person’s body. It is very beneficial for the body if eaten regularly and in moderation. However, those who have stomach problems, allergies or are required to take any specific medication, should consult a doctor before eating raw onions.

This easily available ingredient can not only make food delicious, but also help in maintaining a healthy balance. So choose a diet that is suitable for your body – be aware, stay healthy.
